History

Boogie, also called electro-funk, appeared around 1980 as disco changed s1. It kept the danceable groove of funk but replaced live bands with drum machines and synthesizers s1. The music is warm and smooth, with a strong slapping bass, bright chords and soulful singing s1. D-Train's 'You're the One for Me' (1981) and Patrice Rushen's 'Forget Me Nots' (1982) are well-known records s1. The System's 'You Are in My System' (1982) shows how electronic boogie could sound s1. New York and New Jersey producers such as Kashif made many records in this style s2. Boogie was important for early house music, and its drum machine sounds were reused in Chicago and New York s2. It remains popular with collectors and modern funk producers s1. The style was popular on Black radio in the United States and in clubs in Britain s1. Its electronic drum sounds were reused by early house producers s2.
