History

Jumpstyle is a hard dance style from Belgium and the Netherlands s1s2. It appeared in the late 1990s s1. The name also describes a dance called jumpen, in which dancers kick their heels to the beat s1. The Belgian artist Da Boy Tommy helped popularise the word in about 1998 s1. The music is fast, with a hard kick drum and simple melodies s1. It developed from hard house, hardstyle and hard trance s1. Between 2006 and 2008 jumpstyle became popular across Europe s1. The Dutch duo Jeckyll & Hyde had hits with 'Frozen Flame' and 'Freefall' s1. Patrick Jumpen reached the charts with 'The Secret' s1. The German group Scooter also helped the style become known internationally s1. The music is usually between 140 and 150 beats per minute s1. The dance is as important to the scene as the music s1. Interest fell in the early 2010s, but the style still has a small scene s1.
