History

Progressive psytrance mixes the simple, rolling sound of progressive electronic music with the complex layers of psytrance s1. It began in northern Europe in the late 1990s s1. Producers in Denmark, Germany, Sweden and Norway helped create it s1. The label Iboga Records started in Copenhagen in the middle of the 1990s s2. It became one of the most important labels for the style s2. New Zealand producer FREq released the album Strange Attractors on Iboga in 2004, and many producers copied its sound s2. The music is usually slower than full-on, often around 130 to 138 beats per minute s1. It builds slowly and repeats a hypnotic groove, with fewer big melodies than full-on s1. Artists such as Liquid Soul, Perfect Stranger and Neelix became well known in the 2000s and 2010s s2. Progressive psytrance is often played at sunrise or in the early hours of a party s3. It remains popular at festivals and on digital shops s2.
