Raw / Deep Techno
Stripped, groovy techno with a raw, low-mixed sound, revived in the 2010s.
History
Raw deep techno is a stripped, saturated form of techno s1. It focuses on physical impact instead of a polished mix s1. The music uses pounding four-to-the-floor kicks and simple, repeating grooves s1. It began as a reaction to the clean, clicky minimal techno of the 2000s s2. Producers wanted a warmer, rawer and more human sound s2. Artists such as DVS1, Truncate and Developer became known for it in the 2010s s1. Labels such as Klockworks released many of the records s1. The style is close to hardgroove, which is also loop-based and groove-led s2. Raw deep techno is usually slower and less busy than hardgroove s2. It is also different from minimal techno, which has fewer sounds and a cleaner mix s2. Raw deep techno is mainly played in clubs and at techno events s1. It is popular with DJs who play long, hypnotic sets s1.
